History of the Manchester New Hampshire Veteran Medical Center:
At the end of World War I, many several spirited citizens launched a long fight
to provide a hospital for veterans in New Hampshire. In 1938, a group headed by
Governor Francis P. Murphy, and John L. Sullivan (later Secretary of the Navy)
joined the NH Congressional Delegation in Washington. The two appeared before
the VA Hospital Board with their request.
Approval for the hospital was
granted on March 10, 1945. Building began in 1948 on land owned by the late
Governor Frederick Smyth. The hospital opened on July 2, 1950.
In addition to the main facility in Manchester, NH, services are offered at four
community-based outpatient clinics located in Conway, Portsmouth, Somersworth, and Tilton, NH.
